Eric Shappell, MD, current chief resident, and James Ahn, MD, associate program director, both developed an online asynchronous intern curriculum. Dr. Shappell has an in depth blog called “EM Fundamentals” in which he further delves into the curriculum’s design.
Their work has been featured in the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALIEM) blog IDEA series which highlights educational initiatives across GME learners in academic emergency medicine.

John Lumpkin, MD, MPH is being recognized for over 30 years of extraordinary dedication and exceptional commitment to Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Lumpkin has been instrumental in impacting the survival rates and quality of life of people requiring emergency medical care. His extraordinary accomplishments shall stand as testament to his dedication, perseverance, and life-long service to his peers, EMS professionals and fellow human beings.

John Lumpkin, MD, MPH, is the senior vice president and director of targeted teams. He is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, management, and evaluation of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s efforts aimed at ensuring that all children grow up at a healthy weight, ensuring that all Americans have access to stable and affordable health care coverage, advancing change leadership, and creating a health care system that provides the best possible care at a reasonable cost.
Before joining the Foundation in April 2003, Lumpkin served as the Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health for 12 years from 1991-2003. In doing so, this made Dr. Lumpkin the first African-American to hold this position at the agency. During his more than 17 years with the department, he served as acting director and prior to that as associate director.
Lumpkin has participated directly in the health and health care system, first practicing emergency medicine and teaching medical students and residents at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. He is the past chairman of the board of directors of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the major teaching hospital of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. After earning his MPH in 1985, he began caring for the more than 12 million people of Illinois as the first African-American director of the state public health agency with more than 1,300 employees in seven regional offices, three laboratories, and locations in Springfield and Chicago. He led improvements to programs dealing with women’s and men’s health, information and technology, emergency and bioterrorism preparedness, infectious disease prevention and control, immunization, local health department coverage, and the state’s laboratory services.
Lumpkin earned his MD and BMS degrees from Northwestern University Medical School and his MPH from the University of Illinois School of Public Health. He was the first African-American trained in emergency medicine in the country after completing his residency at the University of Chicago. He has served on the faculty of the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and University of Illinois at Chicago.

Amber Sabbatini, MD, MPH (Class of 2012) recently had some outstanding research published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The name of the research article is “In-Hospital Outcomes and Costs Among Patients Hospitalized During a Return Visit to the Emergency Department”
Dr. Sabbatini recently joined the University of Washington faculty as an acting instructor of emergency medicine. She received her M.D. from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and subsequently completed her residency in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago. After residency, she completed a fellowship in health services research at the University of Michigan, where she also served as an attending physician in the emergency department at the University of Michigan Medical Center and Hurley Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Sabbatini works as an attending emergency physician at Harborview Medical Center. Her research interests include: Appropriateness of hospital admissions, physician resource utilization and decision-making, cost-effectiveness of acute care delivery models and quality outcomes..

Derek Robinson, MD (Class of 2005) has been listed in Diversity MBA Magazine’s 10th Annual Top 100 Under 50 list. He earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Xavier University of Louisiana and a medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. Carrie Jurkiewicz, MD was awarded the FemInEM award for her work with ACEP’s Wilderness Medicine Society in the development of a Wilderness Medical Adventure Race to be held at the ACEP Conference this October 2016 in Las Vegas.

Congratulations to Amy Faith Ho, MD (PGY-3), on her selection as a TEDMED Research Scholar. TEDMED, an exclusive global conference with the leading voices in medicine, is part of the TED organization, most known for its TED talks. Amy was selected as one of the few research scholars who are chosen based on their expertise and passion in the field to help curate and facilitate the programming of the TEDMED conference. Her role as a TEDMED Research Scholar also earned her participation in the TEDMED conference held in Palm Springs this December as part of the Frontline Scholarship program. University of Chicago EM is proud to also help sponsor her in this endeavor. Amy has also given multiple TEDx talks including at TEDxRooseveltUniversity, TEDxUofIllinois and TEDxOakParkWomen.

Congratulations to Dr. William Roberts for being named Uniformed Services University Senior Vice President.
A native of Washington DC, retired Rear Adm. Roberts was raised in Europe while his father served as a diplomat in the U. S. Foreign Service. He earned his Bachelor’s degree (cum laude) from Princeton University, his Doctor of Medicine degree from George Washington University, and a Master in Business Administration degree from Edinburgh Business School, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy’s Medical Corps in May 1979, completed his surgical internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego, and graduated from the University of Chicago’s Emergency Medicine residency, where he served as chief resident from 1987-1988.
He later served as chair, Emergency Medicine Ambulatory Care Department, Naval Medical Center San Diego (which comprised the Navy’s first Emergency Medicine residency) and as commanding officer, Medical Treatment Facility, USNS MERCY (T-AH 19). In 1998, he was appointed deputy commander, Naval Medical Center San Diego, and, subsequently served as force surgeon to Commander, Naval Surface Force, Coronado, California. He commanded Naval Hospital, Bremerton, Washington, one of the Navy’s five Family Medicine teaching hospitals serving the Navy’s third largest area of fleet concentration, from 2003 to 2006.

Established in 2010, The Chicago Community Trust has partnered with National Medical Fellowships (NMF) to create the Dr. David Monash/Harry Lloyd and Elizabeth Pawlette Marshall Medical Student Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to increase the number of qualified medical providers who have a commitment to improving access to quality healthcare in medically underserved communities in Chicago. The program’s goal is to address the 2040 Go To Plan to help increase the number of culturally competent healthcare physician leaders in Chicago.
Seth Kaufman, MD received his B.S. in Neurobiology at the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his medical degree from the University of California – San Francisco, where he conducted Pediatric Neurology research. Dr. Kaufman completed his residency at the University of Chicago in 2005 where he was the EMS Chief. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Kaufman has been affiliated with NorthBay since 2005, most notably in the emergency department as a staff physician and medical director of TeamHealth and Solano Gateway Medical Group, two separate and distinct emergency departments.
Dr. Seth Kaufman has represented NorthBay Healthcare on the Solano Emergency Medical Services Cooperative board of directors, an agency that oversees the county trauma system and EMS response network. He was also on the board of NorthBay Health Advantage. He will assume his new role as chief medical officer for NorthBay Healthcare on Feb. 13, 2017.

Raina Merchant, MD, MSHP is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Co-Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interest is in diffusion of innovation, social media, public health, and resuscitation science. She is the Director of the MyHeartMap Challenge- a social media and crowdsourcing project aimed at improving AED access and awareness. She also runs a Twitter lab which analyzes thousands of tweets related to resuscitation, critical care, and public health/policy. She is the Director of the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab (http://socialmedialab.upenn.edu/). Her work involves development and testing of health related mobile apps and she has conducted several projects evaluating health communication on social/mobile media sites like Facebook, Yelp, Foursquare, Gigwalk, and others.
Merchant earned her undergraduate degree in Psychobiology from Yale University. She completed medical school and residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago and came to Penn as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar. She has also served as a policy scientist for the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR) in the Department of Health and Human Services. In 2012, she was named one of the top 10 national leaders in health care under the age of 40 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and she has been named by Philadelphia magazine as one of the city’s top doctors under 40. Recently, Dr. Merchant has been named an Associate Vice President for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Director of the newly created Penn Medicine Center for Digital Health.

Congrats to Alejandro Palma, MD (EM-3) & Racheal Gilmer, MD (EM-2) for being selected as two of three recipients of the 2017 ICEP Leadership Scholarship. As scholarship recipients, they will be required to attend various ACEP and ICEP leadership conferences and forums. They will both be recognized in various ICEP publications and on ICEP’s social media accounts. In addition, the Leadership fellows will be recognized at ICEP’s Spring Symposium during the Awards Presentation.
The AWAEM Resident of the Year is awarded to honor one superb female resident in the nation. Dr. Ho has shown great promise for significant career achievements in emergency medicine through research, education, service, advocacy, and administration.
Thanks to the hard work of our UChicago EM faculty, Tess Hogan, MD and Tom Spiegel, MD, ACEP has officially accredited geriatric emergency care for emergency departments. Dr’s Hogan and Spiegel along with several other physicians from across the country worked hard in developing the geriatric emergency department (GED) guidelines.
