On June 20, 2012, a University of Chicago second-year resident, Reeo Kim, gained a rare experience for a physician by performing life-saving heroics under extreme outdoor circumstances. While on an aeromedical service rotation, Dr. Kim and the University of Chicago Aeromedical Network (UCAN) received a call for a helicopter medical necessity on the Borman Expressway (I80) for multiple injuries reported and one victim needing extradition by local fire departments under medical supervision.
Under Dr. Kim’s direction and actions, a victim was successfully extricated and transported to a local hospital system for further care. We are proud to have top-caliber residents, like Dr. Kim, in our program, continuing to further the reputation of the University of Chicago’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program as one of the premier EM residency programs in the country.
